Preparing for Emergencies When You Have a Hearing loss

The New Year is the perfect time to update your earthquake/emergency kits. But what if your emergency kits aren't up to date? We have compiled a list of items we recommend to keep in your emergency kits, with special additions for the hearing impaired. You can print this list out for yourself and your family: click here.

What about day-to-day alerts? Can you hear your doorbell? Phone? Smoke alarm? There are many Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) specially designed for alerting people with a hearing loss. These typically involve one or more transmitters, which detect the signal, and one or more receivers, that can alert you by lights, vibrations, or sound emitted at a volume more likely to be heard by people with hearing loss. We are providing training for staff at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward as part of their continuing education program. We are presenting ideas on how to communicate with a hearing-impaired patient, how to identify hearing loss during the assessment process, and a FAQ session on all you need to know about hearing aids.

Our goal is to provide them with the ability to better communicate with patients during their stay at St. Rose Hospital.
